Hello, I’m Matt
I’m a versatile and dependable professional whose experience spans safety-critical railway operations, business ownership, travel services, event management, trade union representation, security work, broadcasting and web application development.
About me
I bring together operational judgement, leadership, customer service, safety awareness and technical ability. I am comfortable taking responsibility, making sound decisions and communicating clearly while working under pressure.
Across all my roles, I aim to be dependable, professional and straightforward. I enjoy solving practical problems, supporting people and turning ideas into reliable services and useful technology.
What I do
I work onboard in the railway industry in a safety-critical operational role, with responsibility for supporting the safe operation of the train and the wellbeing of passengers. The role relies on strong non-technical skills (NTS), including situational awareness, clear communication, decision-making, workload management and remaining calm under pressure.
I run an equestrian business, combining my interest in horses with business management, organisation, customer service, safety and practical problem-solving.
I run an internet technology business providing web hosting, domains and online services. My work includes website and web application development, hosting infrastructure, customer systems, service design, portals, internal tools and online workflows.
As an RMT trade union representative and branch official, I support members, communicate complex matters clearly, represent colleagues and handle sensitive issues with discretion, fairness and professionalism.
Alongside my main roles, I work casually in the security industry, supporting licensed venues and events. This work draws on customer service, situational awareness, conflict management and calm decision-making.
I also work as a independent travel agent, helping clients plan and book cruises, long-haul and short-haul holidays, city breaks, family trips, adults-only getaways and tailor-made itineraries. I can manage bookings on a client’s behalf and help arrange low-deposit options and payment plans where offered by the travel provider.
I enjoy developing websites and web applications, improving online systems and finding practical ways to use technology. My focus is on creating solutions that are clear, reliable and genuinely useful.
I previously worked as a web radio presenter, gaining experience in live broadcasting, programme preparation, audience engagement and confident verbal communication.
Over multiple years, I held a senior event leadership role with a registered charity, helping plan and deliver a large public event attended by more than 10,000 people. I led major parts of the planning and operational delivery, worked with the local council and Safety Advisory Group, coordinated suppliers, deliveries and collections, supported main-stage requirements, managed marketplace stallholders and ensured the event committee had the resources it needed. In one year, I also led the event committee itself. Alongside delivery of the event, I contributed to the organisation achieving registered charity status and led the recruitment and interview process for charity trustees. I have also previously served as a charity trustee, giving me direct experience of governance, collective decision-making, accountability and acting in the best interests of a charitable organisation.
Qualifications & strengths
I hold a Bachelor of Laws – LLB (Hons) from The Open University, supporting my analytical approach, attention to detail and ability to understand and communicate complex issues.
Member of the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators (CIRO), reflecting my ongoing professional connection with railway operations and development.
CIPD Affiliate Member, supporting my interest in people management, workplace practice and professional development.
I hold an Emergency First Aid certificate and a Security Industry Authority Door Supervisor licence, complementing my experience in safety-conscious and public-facing environments.
I hold a full UK driving licence with HGV Class 2 (Category C) entitlement, adding further practical capability and professional responsibility.
Beyond work
I enjoy flight simulation, particularly Airbus aircraft, as well as travelling through cruises, long-haul holidays and shorter breaks.
Horses are a major part of my life. I also enjoy web development, technology and operating a personal weather station that records and shares current local conditions.
